Peruvian-Born Artist Shares “Impressions of Ventura” At Solo Show in July

June 14, 2004

VENTURA, CA—A solo show demonstrating the pastels and oil paintings of Peruvian-born Hilda Kilpatrick, a resident of Oxnard, will be exhibited July 15 through August 15 at Accolades Gallery at 451 East Main Street in Ventura’s El Jardin Courtyard. The public is also invited to a free reception honoring the artist at Accolades Gallery on Saturday, July 17 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Kilpatrick will be on hand to discuss her artistic development and her work.

A native of Peru, Kilpatrick has spent most of her life in Lima, the capital city, and in Trujillo—a restored colonial city brimming with exquisite art and architecture.

Kilpatrick developed an interest in drawing and painting when she was 12. “I come from a family of artists,” she said, explaining that her grandmother was a pianist, her uncle a collector of Peruvian paintings and that her mother took up painting with oils in her fifties. Her father is the attorney general for the Peruvian Ministry of Economy. “I always wanted to study art, but people kept telling me that it wasn’t profitable, and so I studied languages including Italian, English and French.”

Tenaciously hanging onto her dream, Kilpatrick later studied with famous Peruvian portraitist and pastel artist Teresa Suarez Vertiz. She also received a scholarship allowing her to study in Italy and to travel throughout Europe where she encountered the work of her favorite painters, Matisse and Van Gogh.

Since moving to California in 1998, Kilpatrick has increased her productivity and enjoyed studying with Ventura’s own Marcia Cummings, a local painter and sculptor.

Kilpatrick leans toward pastels and oils because she feels they best capture the beauty of the natural world. “My favorite subjects are landscapes including mountains, the ocean, trees, spring and the beautiful California skies,” she said. “I love capturing the color around me and putting it on canvas, and I want to bring sunshine and happiness to the person who is looking at my work.”

Kilpatrick’s paintings may also be seen at Ventura’s summer ArtWalk on August 21.
